On April 11, 2020 Deputy Mayor Brittain passed away after more than 20 years as an elected official. Jean remained involved, rarely missed a meeting even though she was gravely ill. Jean brought a level of thougtfulness and wisdom to Council and meetings she attended. Jean will be deeply missed.
Jean grew up in Digby and attended Acadia University following high school graduation. With degrees in Arts and Education, she taught for several years before leaving the classroom to return home to get involved in several business ventures. During those years, she became a member of the first non-government board of the Nova Scotia Community College.
Having a life-long interest in politics, Jean was successful in securing a Town Council seat in a 1996 by-election. She has since been elected to five additional Council terms. The current term will be completed in 2020.
Jean presently serves as Chair of the Digby Area Recreation Commission, and the Planning Advisory Committee. As part of her Council duties, she also serves on the Western Counties Regional Library Board and the Shared Services Committee. She is a firm believer in transparency, accountability and the need for Council to be a good steward of the taxpayers’ money.
